As promised, here is one of the items that we have been working on, lithopanes!
So, what are lithopanes?
‘A lithopane presents a three-dimensional image – completely different from two-dimensional engravings and daguerrotypes that are ‘flat’. The images change characteristics depending on the light source behind them. ‘ – Wikipedia (More on lithopane history on Wikipedia can be found here – Lithopane – Wikepedia external link
We’ve started to create our own lithopanes, using 3d printed technology. We can now take almost any photographic image, and with the programming, and 3d printer, turn it into a physical lithopane product.
What does it look like when finished?
The lithopane, admittedly doesn’t look like much when it is not back-lit. We have provided images below of the lithopane photographed from above with no back light, and then again with a back light source as well. This is where the magic of the lithopane comes in, as it changes from a simple looking, almost bumpy block, to a recognisable image.
Above is the lithopane, with no back light. As you can see it shows a faint outline, and just looks bumpy. This is normal, and to be expected should you order a 3d printed lithopane.
Above, you can see clear details, just like an old sepia type photograph. This is the same lithopane, just now it is back-lit before being photographed.
Finally, again above, a third example of our lithopane print. This was our first attempt with this image, and was printed in a smaller size than the two example images above this. You can see the detail that shows through when a light is behind, even when printed at the smaller sizes.
We are now able to offer a personalised lithopane service to our customers. To order, we would require a digital copy of your chosen photograph to be sent across to us by e-mail. Ideally, this image would be of good quality, not too dark, or too bright to start with. This is to allow for detail to be printed and shown against a light once finished.
Once we have received your image, and your chosen lithopane size, we can get to work transforming your image into your own lithopane. Once it has arrived, please expect it to look like image one, when it is not back-lit. The magic is all in the back light, which, we can provide frames and lights for at an additional cost.
Prices start from £20.00 + p&p, for this personalised service. All lithopanes are only printed to order, with your specific photographs.
These would make great gifts for anniversaries, birthdays and other special occasions.
